Reading/Language Arts- Students use Houghton Mifflin Harcourt IntoReading curriculum, which focuses on reading comprehension skills to include comparing, determining main idea, analyzing plot, differentiating fact and opinion, and predicting. Grammar lessons, spelling words, vocabulary words and Daily Language Instruction are included in our Language Arts lessons.
Writing- The writing component of IntoReading guides students through letter writing, expository papers, persuasive essays, and research reports. 4th graders are exposed to and can identify a variety of literary genre by exploring authors’ purpose then creating and proofreading personal examples of these types of writing.
Social Studies- 4th grade begins the year with geography and map skills, then a study of the Middle Ages. We then transition to Colorado history in the 2nd Semester. We begin with the geography of our state then move through history from the earliest inhabitants of Colorado to current day topics that affect Colorado.
Science- Studies in Science align with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). In the first semester, that includes studying Energy and Waves. In the second semester, we study Structures and Functions of Living Things and the Earth’s Systems. We then move to the Human Circulatory and Respiratory Systems.
Math- enVision Math is used for 4th grade. This curriculum covers advanced concepts for multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. Adding and subtracting fractions, as well as an introduction to decimals, are included. Geometry and the basics of statistics round out the year’s math instruction.
Religion- We attend mass daily and our classroom study of the Catholic faith comes from Sophia Press Spirit of Truth. Our focus in 4th grade is on theological and cardinal virtues and the Ten Commandments as we deepen our faith and understanding of the teachings of the Catholic Church. Quarterly memory work includes: Virtue Prayer, Act of Faith, Act of Love, and Act of Hope, along with the 10 Commandments, and the Precepts of the Church.
